INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

A college of engineering was started by the name of Civil Engineering College on November 24, 1856, in the premises of the Writers Building, Calcutta. In 2004, B.E. College (Deemed University) was converted into a full fledged university by an act in the West Bengal Assembly and renamed as Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur. The emblem of the university has the motif of its iconic clock tower in blue colour supported by the rays of a yellow rising sun. Its year of establishment is placed at the left and right bottom of the tower in Roman and Bengali respectively. Below this its motto in Sanskrit ‘उतिष्ठत जाग्रत प्राप्य वरान निबोधत’ meaning ‘Get up, Wake up and Listen to the Boons you have Received’ is written and at the bottom the name of the university is written in English and Devanagari. The sun's rays look like the teeth of the gear wheel representing science and engineering education.
