Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU) was established in Patna through an BASU Act No. 15 of 2016 of Bihar Government and notified in the Bihar Gazette on August 29, 2016. The university started functioning from June 13, 2017. This university has been carved out of the Bihar Agricultural University as two of its constituent colleges at Patna viz. Bihar Veterinary College and Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology have been transferred to the BASU, whereas a new College of Fisheries has been established in 2018. The emblem of the university has a bull standing on a pedestal formed by an inverted lotus ensconced by a gear wheel and supported by a banner. The gear wheel is inscribed by its name in Devanagari and English and on the banner, its motto in Sanskrit ‘ज्ञानम् परमम् ध्येयम्’ meaning ‘Knowledge is the Supreme Goal’ is inscribed. The bull is symbolic of the university’s educational domain and the lotus symbolises purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty.
