Bharathidasan University (BDU) was established in February 1982 and was named after the Tamil poet, Bharathidasan. The motto of the university ‘We Will Create a Brave New World’ meaning ‘புதியதோர் உலகம் செய்வோம்’. The Bharathidasan Institute of Management known as BIM is located within the BHEL premises, a public sector undertaking at Thiruverumbur. The emblem of the university has a portrait of Bharathidasan supported by a lotus holding a traditional lamp and surmounted by its name and place in Tamil and English. Below the lotus, on a yellow banner, its motto is written in Tamil and English. The lotus symbolises  purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty and the lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity.
